the wild woods Med. cat app auditions
ThunderClan's Medicine Cat, borealisskies , has opened up auditions for their apprentice! Read on!
High ranks are fundamental for any Warriors role-play community. Not only do they serve a role as the first people new community members meet, they also work to create compelling plots and ensure the activity of their Clans. The high ranks in The Wild Woods are a fundamental component of the role-play and, like their OOC staff counterparts, help to maintain the community while acting in a manner befitting of the outlined mission, vision, and values. We require that high ranks put their best foot forward in all interactions with their fellow members -- to that end, we promise to support the high ranks and help them to see their plots come to fruition.
These applications will close on AUGUST 31st! We want to leave enough time for all interested members to get in an application as well as the chosen member to get acclimated to the role. So be sure to post here before then!
MEDICINE CAT APPRENTICE
While the leader and deputy might take on more militaristic roles when it comes to relationships with the other Clans, medicine cats are often seen taking a more diplomatic and spiritual approach. Medicine cats serve as liaisons between their Clan and their ancestors; they interpret the will and omens of StarClan to benefit those around them (or, perhaps in the case of selfish or malicious medicine cats, themselves). Though warriors may know how to hunt and fight better than most of them, medicine cats prove to have important knowledge when it comes to the healing arts -- in fact, many cats might have succumbed to disease long ago if it weren't for the selfless acts of these knowledgeable cats. Ultimately, medicine cats serve as loyal guides and healers, seeking to ensure mortal compliance with the ethereal and often intangible ancestors.
Outside of IC encounters and events, medicine cats serve an important role of instigating certain plot elements and ensuring the participation of others. They should aid their leaders and deputies as best as they can by engaging with their fellow members and ensuring that everyone feels included. Some might feel that members who are medicine cats might be more approachable than deputies or leaders, and for that reason it is paramount that users playing medicine cats act in a manner that best exemplifies The Wild Woods' mission, vision, and values.
In summary, medicine cats should have the following characteristics in order to be successful:
- Active and engaging: Medicine cats, like leaders and deputies, serve their Clans best by being active. This means going to required events (you have two: Half-moon and the Gathering) and ensuring that you can help leaders and deputies encourage day-to-day role-play within your Clan. To the best of their ability, medicine cats will need to work to ensure that all members feel included through OOC encounters on FeralHeart, Discord, or through the forums. This can be achieved by simply chatting with quieter members or role-playing with them.
- Approachable, friendly, and helpful: Those role-playing medicine cats must ensure that they are able to provide help to members as need be and be as approachable as possible. Likewise, medicine cats should at least be familiar (not fluent) with various OOC information, such as the rules, in order to answer questions as need be. As the only ones who can hold information about herbs, medicine cats will need to be ready to heal their Clanmates!
- Mature and confident: While medicine cats might not be making tough decisions like leaders and deputies, they are part of the high rank team which seeks to make IC community-wide decisions that might be difficult or not well received. Medicine cats, like the other high ranks, will have the full support and backing of the Community Coordinators and Community Helpers and should be able to conform to the expectations laid out in The Wild Woods' mission, vision, and values statement.
- Creative: More so than the other high ranks, medicine cats have a pivotal role in plots by interpreting and sharing omens received from StarClan. Creativity will serve a medicine cat well as they seek to determine plot devices, direction, and overall storyline; in fact, medicine cats might be expected to start plot-based role-play! Please note that medicine cats are not the sole constructors of the plot in The Wild Woods: the rest of the high ranks are equally available to provide input into the story.
When filling out your application, please respond to one of the prompts below:
- There comes a time in very medicine cats life to make a difficult decisions -- some are small and others are life or death. There had just been a large battle between your clan and the neighboring clan, leaving many warriors wounded. You were assigned to get the warriors water and poppy seeds. On your way back, you find a wounded enemy warrior seemed to be phasing between the living and the stars! You recognize them as someone who has in the past been aggressive towards you and your mentor. They are bleeding quite a bit and have shallow breaths. You can't be sure if they will attack you or not, but one thing is certain: saving their life means they will live to fight another day and potentially hurt your Clanmates in the future. Do you take the risk, or do you walk away?
- Your Clan and another Clan have been feuding for as long as you can remember. As Leafbare approaches and the threat of greencough and deadly blackcough loom, you and your mentor have managed to cobble together just barely enough stores of catmint and feverfew to ensure your Clan will be able to survive. During one Gathering, the leader of the rival Clan beseeches your leader for a share of the stores as their Clan has none; unsurprisingly, they refuse -- especially after the recent death of the last deputy at the paws of this Clan. Afterwards, the medicine cat begs your mentor for some of your store as a few warriors have already contracted greencough -- a request they quickly rebuke in fear of the leader's ire. The rival medicine cat turns to you. What do you do?
- After a long Leafbare coupled with moons of fighting with a rival Clan, your Clan has managed to see peace once more restored in time for Newleaf. As the promise of rebirth and new growth whispers on the gentle breeze, you receive a omen from your ancestors: your Clan must push the border with the Clan you just finished fighting in order to acquire a patch of herbs or else there will be unfathomable suffering. With a sense of impending doom accompanying this omen, how do you handle this grave situation?

Role-play Sample:
Thrushpaw took a deep, deep breath. After the battle, him and Featherglow had been running like wild chickens with their heads cut off to help all the injured cats. With most of the major injuries taken care of, both cats could catch a breath, for maybe a heart-beat or two. Featherglow’s voice startled him out of his few seconds of rest. “Thrushpaw, please go get water for the injured cats. I’ll take care of the last few wounds, but we’re almost out of poppy seeds… can you grab some more for me while you’re out too?” Thrushpaw grumbled lowly to himself, flicking his bushy tail. “I’ll go get what you need,” He hesitantly arose to his paws, grabbing a mouthful of moss. He followed the pale beam of light that showed the way out of the medicine cat den.
He walked ever so carefully, following the faint scents he’d marked for himself to help him around camp. Thrushpaw padded out of camp, following the path to the stream. His ears were perked and alert, listening for anything out of the ordinary. He could hear the trickle of the water getting louder as he got closer, until it was touching his toes. The blind tom crouched down until he felt the water lap at his chin. It was cold and uncomfortable, but he’d gotten used to it. Without sight, his touch, smell, and hearing senses had been heightened to help him navigate more easily. He set down the moss in his mouth to sit on the shoreline, deep enough in the stream to soak up the water, but not too deep to drift away. He waited with his paws around it for a few heart-beats to ensure it would stay where he placed it. Fortunately, it stayed in place. Thrushpaw backed out of the water and back onto the pebbly shoreline.
Now came the more difficult part, finding the poppy seeds. He opened his jaw and tasted the air. Grass... trees... blackbird... marigold…. blood? He shook it off as nothing. Although it smelled fresh, he figured it was just from the battle--it was pretty brutal after all. The apprentice padded further along the shoreline, tasting the air once more to thankfully get scent of the poppy flower. Thrushpaw followed the smell of flowers, carefully weaving around rocks and trees as he trailed further into the forest, until the flower was right in front of his nose. He gave the flower a few taps, holding a paw under the flower. He felt a few of the seeds fall onto his pads, giving his paw a shake to allow them to fall into the skin between his pads. Clenching his toes close together as to keep the poppy seeds in place, he turned around and followed his scent trail back to where he left the moss ball, and picked up the soaked moss. He turned his back to the stream and began his journey back to camp.
On the way back, the smell of blood got much more noticeable. After a few more pawsteps, he could hear a faint shallow breathing. Great…. Thrushpaw trailed on the scent of the blood until the tangy smell of ShadowClan hit the roof of his mouth. He scrunched up his nose, putting two and two together. It was not a clanmate. He recognized the cat’s scent as he drew closer. It was the arrogant ShadowClan tom who’d threatened Featherglow and Thrushpaw recently. The tom was badly injured, and for whatever reason he was left behind from the battle. Thrushpaw wondered if it was by accident or not. He’d understand why they left him behind, he was a rather nasty tom without much respect for anyone. However, Thrushpaw couldn’t live with himself knowing if he’d just left this cat to die, regardless of who it may be. Thrushpaw set the soaked moss ball and the poppy seeds down and approached the ShadowClan cat. “Hey, are you okay?” His voice called out to the cat. No reply, just shallow breathing.
The stench of blood was sickening, it smelled as if it was still oozing out. Thrushpaw softly ran a paw over the ShadowClan cat’s body, feeling out where the wounds were. The injured tom flinched, letting out a hiss of pain. “Don’t… touch me…” The ShadowClan tom spat. His wounds were deep, but not life threatening. The fact the ShadowClan tom had a reaction to Thrushpaw touching the wounds was a good sign. It meant at least he wouldn’t die on ThunderClan grounds. Thrushpaw’s fur bristled, “Don’t try anything if you want to keep your life.” He growled, finding the nearest tree. He didn’t feel the need to go above and beyond by cleaning the wounds, but he needed to stop the bleeding to get the cat off of their territory. He ran his paw around the base of the tree, hoping to catch a few cobwebs. He gathered a good wad of cobwebs from some more surrounding trees before returning to the injured tom. “I’m going to stop your bleeding and get you back onto your own territory, your clanmates can take care of you from there.” He grumbled. Why didn’t I just leave the cat? He isn't my responsibility.
Rolling his eyes, Thrushpaw pressed cobwebs into the cats wounds, applying pressure to alleviate the blood flow. Once all the wounds were covered and no longer bleeding--at least as badly as before, Thrushpaw grabbed the cat’s scruff. “Come on, let’s go,” He grumbled through a mouthful of fur. The ShadowClan tom hissed, allowing Thrushpaw to drag him. Thrushpaw knew he was too weak to walk on his own, or else he wouldn’t even think of dealing with the tom for a heart-beat more. Once a few fox-lengths into ShadowClan territory, Thrushpaw dropped the tom. At least now his clanmates might be able to come save him, and he wouldn't die on ThunderClan territory. “You’re welcome,” He snorted, tail lashing as he slunked back to his own territory.
He shook out his fur, grumbling as the smell of ShadowClan lurked. Gross. Thrushpaw would return to his moss ball and poppy seeds, pick both back up, and let his nose guide him back on his trail to camp. His whiskers were outstretched and his ears were perked to lessen the chance of him bumping into anything. Boy, did he have a story to tell Featherglow when he arrived back at camp...
